“We all hold a beast inside. The only difference is what form it takes when freed.”

Rain Ryland has never belonged anywhere, He’s use to people judging him for his rough background, his intimidating size, and now, his orphan status. He’s always been on the outside, looking in, and he’s fine with that. Until he moves to New Wurzburg and meets Friederike Burkhart.

Freddie isn’t like normal teen girls, though. And someone wants her dead for it. Freddie warns he’d better stay far away if he wants to stay alive, but Rain’s never been good at running rom trouble. For the first time, Rain has something worth fighting for, worth living for. Worth dying for.

Ancient magic and modern society collide in a sexy, spellbinding romance perfect for fans of C. C. Hunter and Maggie Stiefvater that proves sometimes beauty is the beast…

Monthly Challenge Wrap-Up

Where is this year going?! I skipped doing an August wrap-up because I was just so busy and to be completely honest I didn’t think I would have time to do a September wrap-up either. It was a great 2 months for reading though and I actually already passed my Goodreads goal! I’m going to combine August and September for this wrap-up.

Overview:

People would kill for her body.

Raised in an elite foster center off the California coast, sixteen-year-old Tabitha’s been sculpted into a world-class athlete. Her trainers have told her she’ll need to be in top physical condition to be matched with a loving family, even though personal health has taken a backseat outside the training facility. While Tabitha swims laps and shaves seconds off her mile time, hoping to find a permanent home, the rest of the community takes pills produced by pharmaceutical giant PharmPerfect to erase their wrinkles, grow hair, and develop superhuman strength.

When Tabitha’s finally paired, instead of being taken to meet her new parents, she wakes up immobile on a hospital bed. Moments before she’s sliced open, a group of renegade teenagers rescues her, and she learns the real reason for her perfect health: PharmPerfect is using her foster program as a replacement factory for their pill-addicted clients’ failing organs. And her friends from the center, the only family she’s ever known, are next in line to be harvested.

Determined to save them, Tabitha joins forces with her rescuers, led by moody and mysterious Gavin Stiles. As they race to infiltrate the hospital and uncover the rest of PharmPerfect’s secrets, though, Tabitha finds herself with more questions than answers. Will trusting the enigmatic group of rebels lead her back to the slaughterhouse?

GUEST POST by Jessica Kapp

The world of …  (World Building)

I’m going to be straight with you. I am not as good at world building as my CPs. Not even close. But the beauty of having CPs with masterful world-building skills is that I can learn from them (and they can critique the snot out of my story until I get it right).

BODY PARTS is set in a new futuristic world, so I had to consider what, if any, advances we as a society had made. I didn’t want the technology so far fetched that gadgets and gizmos needed an explanation. My story is a thriller with sci-fi elements, not straight sci-fi. Therefore the setting for the fictitious island and city of Gladstone needed to be relatable but still an arm’s length away from society we know today.

To create this world, I focused on PharmPerfect, the company that creates super pills that can bulk up muscle mass and smooth wrinkles. Pills that make the residents look flawless. Or, as Tabitha likes to say, freeze dried. With that in mind, I looked at the citizens as part of the world building. I needed to show the results of the addiction to pills. That included the clean streets they walked down, and the prestigious buildings they worked in. Every element is a reflection of their obsession with perfection.

For the hideout where Gavin and his group of renegades plan their rescue missions, I wanted to create an environment that was the polar opposite of what you’d see if you walked down the streets of Gladstone. Gavin and his team find safety in the basement of a dumpy old barn that smells like mildew and straw. They wash dishes by hand and wear hand-me-down clothes. They eat peanut butter sandwiches if that’s all the food they have in the cupboards.

Even though the two environments are so different, there are pockets of Gladstone that are not tainted by perfection. For instance, the Gladstone beach is just that—a beach. There’s no need to improve the sand and sun. Tabitha is apprehensive to step away from the security of the barn, but I wanted her to see a place that had not be touched by PharmPerfect or the citizens who lived in Gladstone. The beach is an important element in that it helped reiterate there is beauty in the world that is not manmade.Giveaway Jessica Kapp BODY PARTS (1).jpg

Book Review & Giveaway – Project Pandora by Aden Polydoros

ProjectPandoraTour.png

Tyler Bennett trusts no one. Just another foster kid bounced from home to home, he’s learned that lesson the hard way. Cue world’s tiniest violin. But when strange things start happening—waking up with bloody knuckles and no memory of the night before or the burner phone he can’t let out of his sight— Tyler starts to wonder if he can even trust himself.

Even stranger, the girl he’s falling for has a burner phone just like his. Finding out what’s really happening only leads to more questions…questions that could get them both killed. It’s not like someone’s kidnapping teens lost in the system and brainwashing them to be assassins or anything, right? And what happens to rogue assets who defy control?

In a race against the clock, they’ll have to uncover the truth behind Project Pandora and take it down—before they’re reactivated. Good thing the program spent millions training them to kick ass…

Review: Project Pandora follows 4 characters and is extremely fast paced. I really got attached to one of the characters and loved everything about him through out the book. The story is told through case notes and status reports which really lets you delve into the characters backgrounds and history and helps pull everything together.

The ending of the book left me pretty upset and clamoring for the next book to see what happens. As a debut novel from Aden Polydoros it absolutely captured my interest and I can’t wait to see the progression in the next story and Aden’s writing.

Love curses don’t exist. At least that’s what Jonas, master of the meaningless hookup, tells himself when a letter warns him he’s an Eros Guardian cursed to endure a test of true love or forever be alone. His levelheaded longtime friend Cora figures it’s a revenge prank by an ex. The way Jonas stamps each girlfriend with a weeklong use-by date, it serves him right.

But when an impulsive kiss between the two friends reveals potential for more, Cora becomes the target of the Groth Maar: demons sent to wipe out the Eros Guardian line. And suddenly the curse becomes dangerously real.

Breaking the curse means Jonas’s biggest challenge yet. Failure guarantees Cora’s death. But success may cost him his own life…and the loss of his carefully guarded heart to the one girl far too sensible to fall for him.

TTK-Teaser1

Review: This book was a great quick read and I really enjoyed all the aspects of it. I’m a sucker for witty banter and Jonas and Cora fully delivered. The will they, won’t they that played out was very enjoyable.  Cora is a take care of herself kind of girl which I fully relate to and really helped me connect to her as I feel like most YA books these days have ditzy main characters.

The curse itself and the world were so interesting to me and I really enjoyed learning about the curse slowly and all the different facets to it. There are a couple of twists in the book and I will say that I saw one of them coming for most of the book, but didn’t expect the other.

I’m excited to see what more we learn about the curse in the next book and where the story for our characters goes. Jonas, Cora, Beth and Leo are a lovable squad that you’ll be rooting for.
